08/08/2001 - "Starting"

Solved ! Thanks to the MZ rider email list.

06/08/2001 - "To Work ?"

Rode to work this week but still having problems starting, which has become a drag.. 10mins of kicking and huffing every time. So I sought some advice from the ever helpful MZ rider email list (Thanks again). I will let you know how I get on.

04/08/2001 - "A Ride Out"

Started second kick (practicing my left foot technique), then out for a little ride around town. Running OK (!) 25 miles later still OK. New things found today - The clutch / lever needs adjusting, the gear lever could be moved out slightly and the fuel pipe connection to the carb is still weeping. Jobs for another day !

03/08/2001 - "A Ride Out ?"

Rechecked the carb and oil pump settings (Again) reassembled the carb and refitted. Fitted the new speedo cable, Then found a better looking choke cable (So fickle). Fitted the newer cable, choke plunger etc then routed all the cables. Checked again. Kicked over a few times with no ignition to move the fuel through. then switched on, kicked over and it nearly started. Repeated. Repeated. There was a quiet moment. Then an idea hit me the magnitude of which I cannot fully express, I would try the choke. First kick and away Ring Ding Ding... I throttle the BM up to 60mph (I see the speedo works) no flat spot. Hurah ! Simon loosens the stuck seat nut, so we can tighten the tank bolt. The retaining lug is already ovaled but at least the tank is more secure. It rains. Time for Tea and a call to Burwin's, they have a secondhand front wheel for £40. Once again I had trouble starting as I left Simon's, but the choke finally helped

02/08/2001 - "Burwin's"

Visited Burwin a little walk from Highbury and Islington Tube. (Phew it was warm) Very friendly and helpful, collected the speedo cable (post strikes had delayed the return of my wrong one), a new clutch cable for Simon and a replacement choke plunger return spring (Note for Simon - Yes I know there is not a world shortage of Biro springs, But this is the genuine article and it was only £1.15). I went into the showroom and behold a new bright red and shiny MZ 251 with the MZ tank (Wow !)

31/07/2001 - "Throttle Twist Grip"

Arranged with Burwin for the correct speedo cable and a replacement spring for the choke plunger (Ping...No Spring). Stripped the throttle twist grip, cleaned, greased and reassembled, oiled the cables. Then refitted the carb. Ah the throttle moves so smoothly now.. Shame the bike doesn't !

19/07/2001- 27/07/2001 - "Still"

Eventually swapped the carbs and with Simon's help we got it running ! Then out for a test ride ! Ran great except for an almighty flat spot at 3/4 throttle.. Also had a go on The Red Bull - Splendid.
Further investigation suggested there may be a float height problem, readjusted to 28 Up 33 Down. Advice had suggested 35 down But I think something would break if I tried that !
The Throttle is still sticking and the choke is jamed... Oh did I forget to say I was sent the wrong speedo cable (for square clocks) and that I need a new front wheel ? I'll mention it then..

17/07/2001- 19/07/2001 - "Trouble Starting"

Trouble starting again as I head off to my local bike repair shop. They give the BM a through inspection and find:- a broken spoke, broken Speedo cable, Broken float in the Carb. BM is due for an MOT in August so things to fix. Runs well on the way back home. However the following day I ride it to work - very hard to start and would not start when it was time to go home..

10/07/2001 - "You need to thrash it Bro, Ride it like you stole it" (Please note the Brothers Grimm do not condone Motorcycle Theft.)

Decide to ride round to Bro's, However BM is NOT starting, I change the sparking plug - Nothing, so I am again reminded of the BM's easy handling. Mercifully Bro cannot kick start it either (How embarassing would that be). So the sparking plug is duly removed, very oily so we clean and replace it, Ring Ding Ding it fires up straight away. Then we reduce the oil pump setting slightly (back to normal now) and tighten the very loose exhaust manifold. Splendid. However something is rattling something is certainly rattling..
A cool summer evening greets me for the all to short ride home.
